European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States
The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.
The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
