Meteorological Balloons Utilized to Illegally Transport Cigarettes Shut Down Lithuanian Airport

Recovered contraband balloons
At least 11 of the meteorological balloons, transporting thousands of packs of illegal cigarettes, have been collected so far

Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when multiple of them drifted across the national airspace.

Flight Disruptions

The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.

Law Enforcement Actions

Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the aviation facility.

Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the Belarusian boundary.

No fewer than 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.

International Illegal Trade

While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."

So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.

Neighboring Country Impact

At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.

Illegal Transport Methods

Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."

Border Protection Aims

Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that such operations become economically unsustainable and present no risk to commercial air travel."

International Concerns

Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.

Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
